How To Choose The Best 10 Person Tent For Rain

As you can see, there are so many excellent 10-person tents out here for your family camping needs. Figuring out which one of these shelters is best for your adventures isn’t always easy- especially when it’s raining!

As you browse through this list, keeping reading the following tips to decide on an incredible investment.

What To Look For When Buying A Waterproof Family Tent

Today, every brand claims that their tents are waterproof and even uses some scientific-sounding terms to make you feel more confident that your new purchase will do the job well. But do they really live up to their promises? Assess the following features and see how each affects water resistance:

Waterproof Tent Fabric Is the King

best tent fabric for you

Which material is used in fabricating your tent? This can affect both the waterproofing and durability of a waterproof tent. In fact, a tent’s material is a critical factor in making your decision; Today, there are many solid choices to go with:

  • Polyester.
  • Nylon.
  • Polyethylene.
  • Canvas (and poly-canvas).
  • UV-Tex 5.
  • Gore-Tex.
  • Vapex.
Nylon

The lightweight nature of Nylon is ideal for backpacking tents. It absorbs water and moisture so that it adds too much to your pack’s total carry weight when encountering rain, so it is not generally used for big family tents.

Polyester

The innately hydrophobic makes it best used for small-budget tents. However, Polyester is heavier and denser than Nylon and cotton, so for a 10-person tent where Nylon is not practical. Polyester is the top choice for many manufacturers, as it’s a little more durable and available in various coatings. The most reason is that Polyester is usually a lot cheaper.

Polyethylene

Polyethylene is a heavy but durable material that has many uses. One of the most popular is being used as flooring in tents for its durability and water-resistance properties. This makes such an ideal choice for tent floors because you can use this without worry about anything getting wet or dirty on your polyethylene surface.

Cotton/canvas

Compared to other tent fabrics, cotton is a great natural insulator. You won’t get as hot on a warm day or as cold when it is chilly, and you can rely on the fabric not freezing in extreme conditions. With its breathability properties and ability to absorb water, cotton can keep you dry and comfortable in rainy conditions.

Cotton tents need to be weathered before you go camping. This will make the cotton fibers swell and nestle, making your canvas tent waterproof for all of those rainy nights in nature! If it is not weatherized beforehand, there may some drops of water come through, which can ruin an otherwise perfect trip.

Polyurethane or Silicone Waterproof Coating

The PU coating is your best bet for those on a budget and looking for a waterproofing family camping tent. The polyurethane (PU) coating on tents is not as expensive or effective as other methods of tent waterproofing, such as silicone or acrylic coatings which are more commonly used for professional camping tents that need to withstand extreme weather and intense sunlight exposure, but it will keep you dry in most cases when camping with the family!

A silicone coating on a nylon tent, called SilNylon, is a different story. A SilNylon tent is highly waterproof and durable but also not breathable, so that condensation could become a problem. SilNylon is an expensive material and is usually used in high-end tents, lasts longer, and is much less prone to mildew.

The waterproof coating has a tendency to turn yellow or reddish-brown when exposed to light. Don’t worry. Its waterproofing property is unaffected. Well, the thing is, PU coating is not resistant to the damaging effects of UV radiation. Some higher-energy UV radiation can cause chemical reactions in the foam so that over time, the polymer chains may break down and become non-waterproof.

Gore-Tex

A fabric innovation that has been successful for nearly six decades, in 1959. According to GORE-TEX, there are nine billion pores in each square inch of the GORE-TEX membrane, and each of these tiny holes is 20,000 times smaller than a water droplet, which makes tents with the GORE-TEX membrane are guaranteed to keep you dry. Furthermore, this is the only breathable synthetic material on the market.

Vapex

Also known as “Vapor Extraction.” This innovative, hydrophilic polyurethane membrane is so exclusive and high-precision. Vapex works similarly to the Gore-Tex membrane- it can only be attached to other fabrics(Like Nylon and Polyester) to prevents the liquid water from outside and lets the inside molecules of water vapor go out.

UV-Tex 5

This is a new type of Polyester that was developed to reflect sunlight and keep tents cooler than traditional materials like Nylon or Polyester; if your family plan to spend much time outdoors and throughout the year, this material might be worth considering!

The UV-Tex 5, Gore-Tex, and Vapex are generally used for smaller tents designed for professionals or winter-specific models, not too much in family camping tents. Certain synthetics can be waterproof without a coating, but they’re often more expensive than coated fabrics because of manufacturing costs, and the lifespan is shorter.

All of these fabrics are great in their own way, but there is no denying that some offer more benefits than others. If you’re looking for a 100% waterproof tent, I think that the Gore-Tex technology tents will suit your needs best! For a 10-Person family camping tent that will keep you dry in any situation, canvas might be just what you need!

Type of Tent Taped Seams: Why Are They Important?

SEAL-THE-TENT-SEAMS

Whatever tent material you choose, if the seams aren’t sealed and taped, then your tent will leak or completely fail in rainstorms. The keywords and phrases that indicate they have been tested for this purpose can be found on some product descriptions:

Fully Taped Seams

Obviously, every seam on the tent is taped regardless of its position. I highly recommend fully taped seems when you are looking for a fully waterproof tent.

Critically Taped Seams

As the name suggests, only the critical seams are sealed, usually located in the most leak-prone area of your tent. It’s perfectly adequate for most waterproof jackets and should be avoided if you want the best waterproof tents available.

Welded Seams

A construction technique involves fusing two pieces of material, typically metal or plastic. This is done with the application of heat and pressure to seal them together without any stitch holes for water or chemicals to penetrate through. In most cases, Welded seams work best for tent floors made from polyethylene mainly because they do not work with every material.

You Need a Bathtub Floor Tent

Why-Bathtub-style-Floor-Tent
Have you ever woken up to find your tent floor flooded with rainwater? It’s never a fun experience. If you don’t have good campsite selection skills, thankfully, a bathtub-style tent floor is one way to get maximum protection when camping on damp ground. For a bathtub floor tent, the thicker, waterproof fabric on the floor extends up the side tent walls for six inches, which can elevate the side seams and make sure no seams are touching the ground. As a result, the groundwater won’t reach them, and they will stay dry.

Consider a Fully-covering Rainfly

Fully-covering-Rainfly tent
If you want to keep water out of your tent, go for a tent that comes with a large or full-covering rainfly if possible. Of course, the rainfly will be made with waterproof materials. There are three primary materials that rain flies are made of. Polyester is the most common and does a great job for campers with lighter needs, while those that plan on spending an extended period of time in bad weather should opt for PVC, which has been proven tough enough to last through harsher conditions.

Be Careful with a 10 Person Tent Capacity

Most of these 10-Person tents look like they are going to accommodate 10 people, but oftentimes this is not what’s happening once it has been set up! While there may only be 10 sleeping pads inside each one, their comfort/space varies dramatically depending on how big the structure actually ends up being. So before making that final purchase check the actual size first so as to buy something that will offer more than just an illusion of a luxury family camping experience.

Bottom Line

I hope this guide helps you find the perfect 10-Person tent for your next family camping trip. If you take nothing else from this guide, please remember these points:

  • The best tent fabric material when looking at big 10-person family tents is canvas, but the canvas tent needs to be seasoned before your upcoming adventure.
  • Keeping in mind, a fully waterproof tent always comes with fully taped seams.
  • If your campsite is expecting heavy rain, a tent with bathtub flooring can keep you dry and comfortable.
  • Go for a tent that comes with a large or full-covering rainfly if possible.
  • Don’t just focus on the number of people it can accommodate, check the actual dimensions of a tent.
