CLIMBING: SPEED COMPETITION RULES AND REGULATIONS Date: Sunday June 8th, 2008 Location: Golden Peak, Vail, CO. Practice Time: 10:00am – 11:00am Qualifiers Time: 11:30am – 12:30pm Finals Time: 1:00pm – 2:00pm HOW TO ENTER: The Speed Competition is a competition where climbers race up two (2) bouldering problems as quickly as they can. The Speed Competition is open to athletes 16 years old or older on June 1st, 2008. All interested climbers must pre-register on the Teva Mountain Games website @ www.tevamountaingames.com. Climbers may also register on-site at the Teva Mountain Games® registration if all sixty (60) registration spots have not been filled (30 per gender). Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. This is an individual competition and the fee is $40 per person. Organizers will not be responsible for incomplete, lost, or misdirected registrations or for registrations not received for any reason, including, without limitation, failure or malfunction of any communications network or equipment or computer software or hardware. CLIMBING RULES USA Climbing, the National Governing Body for competition climbing in the United States, is organizing all climbing competitions for the Games®. USA Climbing formats, rules and regulations will be used. USA Climbing Sport Climbing Series 2008 rules will be used to judge this event. Click here for a complete set. FORMAT DESCRIPTION: There are two (2) rounds of competition: Qualifiers and Finals. There are two (2) sets of Bouldering problems on which all climbers in both genders will compete. All participants will have one (1) hour to practice the aforementioned boulder problems on the day of the competition. Each climber’s score is the sum of their time on the two (2) problems, while running head-to-head races against other competitors. EQUIPMENT: Bouldering walls and landing mats will be provided by the organizer. Each climber is responsible for his/her shoes and chalkbag. QUALIFIER ROUND: TIME 1) Selection: Climbing competitors will be ranked at random and must adhere to the start position he/she is given. 2) Climbing: Climbers will climb both problems as quickly as possible. The time indicated by the electronic timing system is the official time unless otherwise stated by the Chief Judge. The problems will be run simultaneously by the climbers in the order, in which they were ranked. 3) Timing and Total Score: Each competitor will be scored based on the sum of the times on the two boulder problems. If a climber does not receive a time for one or both boulder problems and is not disqualified, s/he will receive a time of one minute. The top eight (8) men and women advance to finals. FINAL ROUND: TIME 1) Ranking: Finalists from the Qualifier Round will be ranked as follows: #1 vs. #8, #2 vs. #7, #3 vs. #6, #4 vs. #5 2) Climbing: The Finalists will climb on the same two (2) problems used for the Qualifier Round. After the first round of pairs, the fastest from each heat advances so the ranking is as follows: #1/8 vs #4/5, #2/7 vs. #3/6. After the second round of pairs, the fastest from each heat advances. 3) Timing and Total Score: The winner of the final heat, based on the total time, is the winner. The second person in that heat is second place. The other two climbers from the previous round (#1/8 vs #4/5, #2/7 vs. #3/6) will run for third and fourth place ranking. Additional Rules and Information CLIMBER ELIGIBILITY: The Speed Competition is open to athletes 16 years old or older on June 1st, 2008 regardless of state and/or country of residency. Competitors who are under the age of 18 must register with a parent or legal guardian. Competitors must be able to attend all scheduled events. Climbers will be required to provide all their own equipment. Further, climbers must abide by all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations during their participation in the Speed Competition. PARTICIPATION: Speed climbers agree to be bound by the Official Rules and all decisions of Organizers. Organizers reserve the right to disqualify any persons found tampering with, or otherwise abusing, any aspect of the Speed Competition as solely determined by Organizers. CONSTRUCTION: The Organizers will complete all construction of the climbing areas based upon town regulations, materials available and weather conditions. Organizers reserve the right to change construction based on unforeseeable events such as weather, safety issues, etc. DISPUTE RESOLUTION: Organizers will appoint scoring judges and the decision of those judges will be final. There will be no review of scoring even with the presence of TV cameras. Disputes with Organizers and/or appointed judges will result in disqualification of that climber. RESERVATION OF RIGHTS: Organizers reserve the right to disqualify any climber for any reason, including, without limitation, acting in an unsafe, unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner and/or with intent to intimidate, threaten or harass, or harm another person. All decisions with respect to the disqualification of climbers shall be made by Organizers and/or appointed judges. Failure to comply with any term or condition of these Official Rules may result in a climber’s disqualification, and the forfeiture of his/her interest in any prize. Organizers reserve the right to amend these Official Rules at any time in its sole discretion, and climbers shall have no recourse for any such changes or for any failure (whether inadvertent or otherwise) by Organizers to follow the stated rules. In the event that the Speed Competition is canceled prior to the completion of the event, prizes will be awarded based on scores taken from the previous round. If the event is cancelled altogether, Organizers will return entry fees to all climbers. Climbers will not be otherwise compensated for any costs or expenses associated with their participation in the competition. ORGANIZERS: The 2008 Teva Mountain Games® Speed Competition (“Speed Competition”) will be organized and produced by staff from Untraditional Marketing and USA Climbing (“Organizers”). The decisions of Organizers regarding the selection and elimination of climbers, the selection of finalists and winners, and the production and administration of Speed Competition related events, and all other aspects of the Speed Competition, shall be final and binding in all respects. Organizers will not be responsible for typographical, printing or other inadvertent errors in these Official Rules or in other materials relating to the Speed Competition.
